If you’re reading this, it’s not too late. Mother’s Day might be around the corner but there’s still time to plan something special. We know, you told yourself you would plan ahead this year – but if you’ve found yourself looking for last minute gift ideas, you can take a breather.
Some argue Mother’s Day should be celebrated every day and others take the day to commemorate moms, step-moms, mentors, mother figures, teachers and guardians. We’re not your mother but we’re happy to act as your fairy godmother, just in time for the big day. If you’re looking to do more than just posting a picture on Instagram this year, keep reading!
134 Peter St.
Name a more iconic duo than Mother’s Day + brunch. We’ll wait.
But seriously, Ricarda’s is whipping up an epic Mother’s Day all-you-can-eat jazz brunch – catered for the whole family!
The brunch will be decked out with 11 food stations including s’mores, crepes + pancakes, pastries, omelettes, salads, seafood, foie gras, a carving bar, an assortment of pasta and more. We bet that’s more food than you can even eat. The atmosphere inside Ricarda’s is incredible too! With beautiful natural light, trendy décor and pretty food, we won’t judge you for all the Instagramming you’ll do.
While you’re stuffing your faces, the wee ones in the family will be entertained at the Kids Play Zone inside the Atrium (right next to the dining area) where chaperones will watch over the kiddies while they enjoy a huge bouncy castle, toy train, doll house and play kitchen!
If you fall in love with Ricarda’s or you can’t make it this weekend, don’t worry – it hosts Sunday brunch every weekend!
Cook for Mom
If you think mom would rather something lowkey and special from the little ones, consider signing up for Ricarda’s Cook for Mom event taking place the Saturday before Mother’s Day for a 1.5-hour session either in the morning or afternoon.
The staff at Ricarda’s will instruct kids ages 3+ how to create a whole meal for mom from scratch! While mom sits back and relaxes, the kids will learn how to properly wash their hands and then proceed with whipping up a salad, flatbread and cupcake before presenting the meal at the end. It’s really quite adorable. Give Ricarda’s a call to reserve a spot!
Posies Flower Studio
270 Wellington St.
We’re sure grocery store flowers will make mom smile, but why not wow her with hotel lobby status flowers? Posies Flower Studio is a hidden gem flower shop in the Toronto Entertainment District and when owner Araz isn’t putting together floral arrangements for the Ritz Carlton, Bisha, Le Germain, InterContinental and others, she’s ensuring her flowers are the BEST gifts for special occasions like Mother’s Day. You heard us – Posies stays open on Sundays for all you last-minute shoppers, unlike most flower shops!
You’ll find floral species imported from all over the world here, not only your average roses and lilies – although, the roses are mostly from Equador! Mother’s Day is the perfect time of year for the largest variety of flowers, but rest assured, you will always find the most unique arrangements all year long. When you walk into the shop, Araz and her family will make you feel at ease with their passion for flowers and love for the art. Oh, and did we mention Posies Flower Studio also delivers across the GTA? It’s truly a no-brainer.
383 King St. W
You’re either thinking “she would LOVE this” or “she would NEVER do this”. For those of you with adventure seekers in your life, Escape Manor is pretty darn cool and will make for an out-of-the-box gift to do together. When you walk in, you can ease your nerves at its lounge where you’ll find puzzles, board games and bocce ball alongside your cocktails, craft beer and light bites.
Once you’ve mustered up the courage to head to your escape room, you’ll be amazed at the thought and creativity put into each of the rooms. There’s the Asylum (filled with a creepy gurney, blood and writing on the walls and jars filled with god knows what), Wine Cellar (it’s up to your imagination to figure out what those barrels are really full of), Death Row (will you be sent to the chair or will you make it out in time, Prison Break style?) and Devil’s Advocate (do you know who you made a deal with?).
And if that’s not enough to get your adrenaline going, Escape Manor also provides Axe Throwing sessions for all experience levels! All in all, you might end up hating each other or maybe your bond will grow even closer by the end of the day, but we guarantee you’ll have fun finding out.
There’s nothing wrong with chocolates and jewelry or functional gifts like label makers and mops, but it’s 2019 and your moms and mentors have done a lot for you. We recommend checking out Toronto-based handbag designer Azure Lazuli for its collection of beautiful clutches, totes and wallets to show your appreciation this year.
Turning from architecture to fashion design, founder and creative director Ashley Phillips is creating one-of-a-kind contemporary bags perfect for women of all ages. The sophisticated design will make people stop in the streets to admire and we think you’ll definitely win ‘child of the year’ with this one.
We hope we’ve inspired you to make this Mother’s Day the best yet! We’ve done the work for you, so the least you can do is make that reservation or choose between flowers and handbags.
